Different lifestyles, meant different types of eating habits. For rich Ancient Romans, they would have breakfast, which they called jentaculum, which would be eaten in the master bedroom. The meal included a slice of bread and a wheat pancake that was eaten with dates and honey. The Romans also drunk wine for breakfast too. Lunch, which they called prandium, was eaten at roughly 11:00 am. This meal included a light meal of bread, some cheese and possibly some meat. All of the big main things that you hear Romans eat went towards the main meal of the night. Dinner was eaten in the late afternoon or in the early evening. If the owner of the hosue had no guests, it would take the cook an hour to cook the meal.If he had guests the meal would take as long as 4 hours. This meal included some vegetables, some herbs and spices thrown in there together and some wheat meal that looked like porridge. Romans weren't big meat eaters.
A light supper was eaten before they went to bed and this included some bread and some fruit.
Expensive food was a way that Romans could show off how wealthy they were to others. If you hosted a banquet at your villa (your house), people would bring fancy food like roast peacock and ostriches. This was so that the Ancient Romans could show off how wealthy they were.
