Back in Ancient Rome, people used to get around by travelling on horses backs, in carts pulled by oxen or walking Roman soilders built roads so people would know where they were going. All the roads that were built were dead straight. The ancient Romans knew the shortest distances to other places from one another and that was going straight.Sometimes the roads would have a little curve in them or they would have a little zig-zag in them. The Romans built their roads on chalk, clay and gravel. They laid big flat stones on top of them. The roads had ditches in either sides of them so that when it rained, the rain water would go down into the ditches. When the Romans built the roads, in really boggy mud, the engineers would lay sticks ans sheepskin down on the mud so the stones wouldn't sink into the ground.
